NBN Co
NBN Co is an Australian government-owned corporation tasked to design, build and operate Australia's National Broadband Network.
History
Establishment
NBN Co was established on 9 April 2009 under the name of its company number, "A.C.N. 136 533 741 Limited".[3] After the establishment, the Australian Government started referring to the company as "National Broadband Network Company",[4] which became the de facto company name. It was officially named "NBN Co Limited" on 6 October 2009.[5][6][7][8]

Mike Quigley was appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of NBN Co on 25 July 2009.[9][10][11][12][13]
The appointment of Quigley and of Jean-Pascal Beaufret, who was appointed chief financial officer (CFO), was overshadowed by a bribery investigation by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission of their former employer Alcatel-Lucent. Neither man was accused or charged with any wrongdoing by the investigating authorities.[14][15][16] There were further concerns raised when NBN Co awarded a tender to Alcatel-Lucent for the supply of electronic components for the NBN, although Quigley and Beaufret excluded themselves from the tender process.[14][17]
At the end of June 2010, NBN Co had 207 employees (Approx 900+ at the end of June 2011), 111 based in Sydney, 92 in Melbourne, three in Canberra and one in Tasmania.[2]
Funding and ownership
The FTTP incarnation of the NBN was originally estimated to cost A$43 billion, however, NBN Co later revised down the cost to A$35.7 billion although there is a separate $11.7 billion contribution to Telstra which is not included in this price. The Australian Government plans to invest A$27.1 billion throughout the construction, with an initial investment of A$4.7 billion. NBN Co plans to repay the Government's investment by 2034. The remaining funds will be raised from the private sector.[18]
